Book Review: Stork M.I.A. by Sandro Isaack
Where do babies come from? Kids who are young enough to still believe the stork-delivery theory will enjoy following two dads’ humorous quest to find a baby in Stork M.I.A.
The first page introduces the reader to Dad and Dad, who have been together for 10 years. Dad and Dad see lots of moms and dads getting babies from the stork, but have yet to find one on their doorstep. Eventually, they get tired of waiting and go looking for the stork themselves.
Mom and Mom play an important role in the story as well. They just met the stork in Guatemala, where they picked up baby Paco. They give Dad and Dad the important hint that the stork will be in China next. That is exactly where Dad and Dad find the stork, along with baby Ava.
The story is energized by the author’s clever cartoon illustrations. Signs pointing the way to the stork are interspersed throughout and will keep kids involved and guessing how the quest will end.
As older children may know, Stork M.I.A. isn’t a realistic look at the adoption process. It is, however, a great way for parents to start talking about adoption with younger children. It gets at the emotional core of adoption: “All children deserve a loving home.”
